Nag Champa: 4 Bizarre Ways to Use This Combination (and Why)

Nag Champa At a Glance

Nag champa is a fragrance originating on the Indian subcontinent, which includes sandalwood and magnolia OR frangipani (plumeria).

This combination has woody notes similar to patchouli and has notes of powder, musk, amber, and vanilla.

The fragrance has grown in international popularity. Most common is the blue box of satya sai baba nag champa depicted in the image below.

Aside from a burning incense, nag champa essential oil has been co-opted into numerous products including candles, soap, sprays, and more.

Some people believe nag champa has positive health effects, but there is little scientific evidence focused on the benefits of nag champa specifically.

We will demystify the fragrance, show you how (and where) to buy nag champa, and the best ways to use it.

History of Nag Champa

Early history of nag champa usage is unrecorded, but it is safe to assume some version has been used for many hundreds (if not thousands) of years.

Ayurvedic medicine (traditional Indian medicine) relies heavily on organic materials (including the plants used to make nag champa) for healing practices.

Nag champa rose to prominence on the heels of an Indian man named Sathya Sai Baba, who was a guru, spiritual leader and philanthropist in the 1940s until his death in 2011 [1].

The Sathya Sai Baba nag champa blue box is what most people (including this author) have purchased whenever nag champa was available.

How to Use Nag Champa Incense

Nag champa can be used to make several products just like most essential oils. Nag champa incense is most common (to be burned in the home), but there are numerous others including:

  • Nag champa spray
  • Nag champa candles
  • Nag champa soap
  • Nag champa essential oil

Use the incense to bring a specific aroma into a space (whether outdoors or more often indoors). Similar to palo santo wood or sage, incense can alter brain chemistry.

Incense and aromatherapy can influence mental state (such as things like stress or anxiety) [2]. One study found that certain essential oils can decrease stress, but no study exists on nag champa specifically [3].

Using nag champa incense as part of a ritual can be valuable because of the potential anti-stress effects. For example, use nag champa after returning home from work to help unwind, start meditation etc.

Satya Sai Baba Nag Champa Warning

Whether the satya sai baba nag champa changed in his lifetime or afterwards is unknown, but the quality of the blue box of nag champa is not as high as it once was.

[yellow-text-box]Users complain that the blue box of incense used to have larger wooden sticks and the aroma lasted for much longer.[/yellow-box-text]

According to some buyers of nag champa, this is related to the sawdust or wood that is added to the nag champa.

This smells worse than the original many decades ago, but one way to reduce the bad odor is to shake off the wood as shown in this video.

Nag Champa Spray

An essential oil spray is a great way to diffuse the aroma into the air regularly. A nag champa spray will small like nag champa for less time than the incense, but you can use it as often as you like.

We have created a guide for you to develop your own essential oil spray whether it is nag champa essential oil or something else.

Nag Champa Soap

Usually people who appreciate the smell of the nag champa incense decide to add soap to their home as well. The nag champa soap can be made into bar form or simply used in a bottle.

Some people become obsessed with nag champa and this is an easy way to use it frequently.

Nag Champa Essential Oil

The essence of nag champa is concentrated in the essential oil (as with any other plants). This mixture of essential oils can be used as a raw material to make any of the above items.

A common and pleasant way of using nag champa essential oil is with handmade nag champa candles.

Nag Champa Reviews

As with any fragrance, there are some people who like nag champa and others who do not. The commonly found satya sai baba is not a favorite of this author’s girlfriend, but millions love it.

One writer named Anna Jube wrote “...it smells better than anything and does have a strong positive effect on my mood. The process itself feels therapeutic…like, I feel really good.” [4]

Another “pop” blog called Style Craze has an article with a series of benefits, but none of them seem substantiated and the references point to other blogs (rather than references) [5]. This article smells fishy (ha!).

Where to Buy Nag Champa

There are numerous channels to buy nag champa and especially the satya sai baba box. The best place to buy nag champa incense is obviously Amazon (where else?), but as the video above shows, the quality of satya sai baba has decreased in recent years.

For something a bit more handmade and crafted, we suggest nag champa candles. They last longer, they are a “cleaner” smell and are more appreciated by users.
